William L. Dismuke
Bill is a founder and principal of the Firm, focusing his practice in estate planning, probate and entity transaction areas of the law. Individuals, families and businesses have turned to Bill for over thirty years to assist them in preserving their value and wealth and assuring that their goals are achieved with as little taxation as possible. Clients trust Bill to provide deep and broad reaching analysis and advice to discover creative solutions to the legal problems they encounter.
Assisting in the formulation of hundreds of estate plans with an equally large number of different family patterns provides Bill with experience like few others. To him an estate plan is not just assembling documents but understanding the personal concerns, strengths and opportunities unique to each person and family so that the law, techniques and his personal creativity can result in ideas and a structure that will enhance the family for generations to come.
As a result of the relationship of trust that has resulted from his counsel over the years, many families come to Bill to assist them when a family member passes. He provides patient and understanding guidance to help them legally and emotionally transition through the probate process into the best possible structure to accomplish their goals with as little complication and tax as possible.
Many of Bill’s clients have acquired their wealth through owning and operating their businesses. As a result, he has served as counsel to numerous businesses and individuals in planning and implementing overall business goals and specific tax-oriented plans, combining his knowledge of tax and corporate law with an understanding of the impact of such plans on financial statements and cash flow.
Bill is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Texas, United States Tax Court, United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas and was recently recognized as the Professional of the Year by the Community Foundation of North Texas. Bill was selected as a Texas Super Lawyer in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Since 2016, Bill has also served as the Texas LexisNexis Practice Advisor Series Editor for Designing an Estate Plan and Trusts Practice areas.
Bill is a member of the Tarrant County Bar Association (Trusts and Estate Planning Section), the Dallas Bar Association (Business, Probate, Taxation and Estates Section), the State Bar of Texas (Wills – Trusts-Probate, Real Estate, Taxation and Business Law Sections), and the American Bar Association.
Bill graduated in 1982 from Baylor University School of Law where he was the recipient of the Pakis, Cherry, Beard and Giotes award as the outstanding student in the tax and corporate area. He received his B.B.A. in accounting from Texas Tech University in 1977 where he graduated cum laude. Prior to entering law school, he worked as a public accountant with the firm of Alford Meroney & Co. in Dallas, Texas, receiving his Certified Public Accountant designation in 1980. Bill is Board Certified in both Tax Law and Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
In addition to his legal career, Bill served on the Board of Women’s Haven of Tarrant County between the years of 1986 through 1993 and as President in 1991. He also has served on the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Arlington and has actually been a “Big Brother” since 2000. Bill served on the Board of Directors of the North Texas Community Foundation from 2010 to 2017. Additionally, Bill has been very active in his church, North Davis Church of Christ, since 1977 where he has taught Bible classes to college students and other adults, and served as a deacon from 1982 until 2004, at which time he began serving as an elder.
Bill and his wife, Paula, have two daughters, Jessica and Taylor, and two treasured granddaughters, Elliott and Lucy. Away from the office Bill is always reading four or five books on a wide array of topics, doing various activities in and around his church, and staying fit so he can engage in his passions of traveling with Paula, snow skiing, and scuba diving.
